Medicare Open Enrollment 2026 — What Vernal Residents Need to Know
Medicare enrollment periods determine when you can join, switch, or drop coverage. Missing a deadline can lock you into the wrong plan for an entire year — or trigger permanent premium penalties. Here is everything Vernal and Uintah Basin residents need to know about Medicare enrollment in 2026.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7, 2026
The Annual Enrollment Period is the main window for making changes to your Medicare coverage. During AEP, you can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, switch from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare (and add a Medigap and/or Part D plan), join a Medicare Advantage plan for the first time, or change your Part D prescription drug plan. Changes made during AEP take effect January 1 of the following year.
Why Review Your Plan Every Year?
Medicare plans change annually. Premiums, copays, formularies, and provider networks can all shift from one year to the next. A plan that covered your medications cheaply last year might move them to a higher cost tier this year. Doctors and pharmacies can leave networks. The only way to know is to compare — and AEP is the time to do it.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP): January 1 – March 31
If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and want to make a change, the OEP allows one switch. You can move to a different Medicare Advantage plan or drop your Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare with a Part D plan. This is not the time to join Medicare Advantage for the first time — that happens during AEP or your Initial Enrollment Period.
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your IEP is a seven-month window centered on the month you turn 65: three months before, the month of your birthday, and three months after. This is when you first sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B. Delaying past this window without qualifying coverage (such as employer insurance) triggers late enrollment penalties that increase your Part B premium permanently by 10% for each full 12-month period you were eligible but not enrolled.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
Certain life events qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. These include losing employer or union coverage, moving out of your plan's service area, qualifying for Extra Help or Medicaid, or experiencing other qualifying circumstances. SEPs let you make changes outside the normal enrollment windows.
