Medicare Supplement Plan G vs Plan N — Vernal, Utah 2026
Looking for the bigger picture? See the comprehensive Medicare guide for Vernal residents — covers Medicare Advantage, Medigap, Part D, costs, enrollment, and local providers.
Plan G and Plan N are the two most popular Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans in Utah. Both pair with Original Medicare to reduce your out-of-pocket costs, but they differ in coverage, premiums, and how copays work. For Vernal and Uintah Basin residents, choosing between them affects your annual healthcare spending significantly.
Plan G Coverage
Plan G is the most comprehensive Medigap plan available to new Medicare enrollees. It covers the Part A deductible ($1,676 per benefit period in 2026), Part A and Part B coinsurance and copays, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, Part B excess charges (when doctors charge above Medicare-approved amounts), first three pints of blood, and 80% of foreign travel emergency care. The only cost Plan G does not cover is the annual Part B deductible ($257 in 2026). After paying that deductible, Plan G enrollees typically pay nothing else out of pocket for Medicare-covered services.
Plan N Coverage
Plan N covers most of the same items as Plan G with two differences. Plan N does not cover Part B excess charges, and Plan N requires copays of up to $20 for doctor office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that do not result in admission. In exchange, Plan N premiums are typically $30–$60 per month lower than Plan G.
Cost Comparison in Utah
In Utah, Plan G premiums for a 65-year-old non-smoker typically range from $120 to $180 per month. Plan N premiums typically range from $80 to $140 per month. The premium difference narrows as you age. Your total annual cost depends on how frequently you visit doctors and whether any of your providers charge Part B excess amounts.
Which Plan Is Better for Vernal Residents?
Choose Plan G if: you visit doctors frequently, you want predictable costs with no copays, you see specialists who may charge excess fees, or you value simplicity — one deductible per year and nothing else. Choose Plan N if: you are relatively healthy and see doctors infrequently, you want a lower monthly premium, you are comfortable with small copays, and your doctors accept Medicare assignment (no excess charges).
Important: Underwriting Matters
In Utah, Medigap open enrollment lasts six months starting when you first enroll in Part B at age 65 or older. During this window, insurers cannot deny you or charge more for pre-existing conditions. Outside this window, medical underwriting applies — you may be denied coverage or charged higher rates based on health history. If you are switching from Medicare Advantage to Medigap outside open enrollment, underwriting is required.
